MAFSM Supports Youth Education Through Floodplain Model Demonstrations
To reserve the model, please contact Paul Slonac at PSlonac@mbakerintl.com.
2021 Demonstrations
As part of a Maryland Silver Jackets Team outreach effort, a 3D model demo was performed at Beechfield Elementary/Middle School. Other partners at the event included the Maryland Insurance Administration, Baltimore City Dept. of Planning, Office of Emergency Management, and the Department of Public Works. Each had booths set up with literature and giveaways. The 3D model was used to educate kids and their parents about runoff, stormwater management and flooding.
2020 Demonstrations
-
- Forest Ridge Elementary, Laurel: Fifth-graders at the STEM fair on February 7, 2020.
- Trinity Middle School, Ellicott City: Career Day on March 5, 2020
- Maryland Silver Jackets Team at the Stillmeadow Community Fellowship in SW Baltimore October 3, 2020
On Saturday, October 3rd, Maryland Silver Jackets Team members demonstrated a Ward’s® Stormwater Floodplain Simulation System on the steps of Stillmeadow Community Fellowship in SW Baltimore. The Silver Jackets Team is working with the community on an outreach project following a catastrophic flood that occurred in May 2018. During the demonstration, children learned about watersheds, stormwater runoff, and the importance of maintaining our green spaces. The Ward’s® 3D model is owned by the Maryland Association of Floodplain and Stormwater Managers (MAFSM), and creates an educational opportunity for kids and parents alike.

MAFSM was awarded a WARD’S 3D Flood Simulation Model in 2011. MAFSM received this as part of a program to get WARD’S Stormwater Floodplain Simulation Systems into local schools impacted by flooding. To check out more on OPP’s program to get Flood Risk Education in Schools visit their Facebook page.
Train-the-trainer seminars have been held at our 2011-2014 conferences.
Please check out our YouTube videos from the 2011 conference here and here.

The goal of this initiative is to get WARD’S 3D Flood Simulation Model into the schools. The benefits of this campaign will be to:
- Help children who have been through a flood understand it from an engineering and scientific standpoint in order to process the trauma and give them a sense of control over their world.
- Raise awareness of the benefits of properly managed water resources and promote ASFPM and the profession of floodplain management to students through hands on-demonstrations and lessons.
MAFSM is committed to working toward flood risk education and outreach
